It is a large river and one of the few water sources in Egypt, which is in a desert. Without the Nile, Egypt could not have existed. The Egyptian empire may not have existed either.

Egypt was called the gift of the Nile because the Nile river gave life to the desert. This was an essential river during this time and civilizations started developing after people began farming in this region.
