Venice, the maritime empire created by the Italian city-state, was dominant in European trading in Mediterranean. Venice dominated trade between Europe and Asia, extending its influence from the city proper, at the western edge of the old Byzantine Empire, to the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
