David Theno instituted the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) system after this disaster. This required actual microbial sampling of beef so ensure that it was not contaminated with e. coli. Prior to this, companies usually used visual sampling, which clearly was inaccurate. The use of HACCP has hopefully helped to make the industry safer and reduce the amount of fatal outbreaks.
