Why was it difficult to spread industrialization in the south?

The economy of the South had been based on slavery and agriculture for decades, if not centuries. As a result, before the Civil War the South was well behind in industrialization as compared to the North. So the South was already behind in its industry development. After the Civil War, it took a significant amount of time to invest and develop in industrial opportunities for the South.
