Japan agreed to a cessation of immigration in 1908. This was due to the prevailing anti-Oriental sentiment that was prevalent in the US at the time, much of which was due to the idea that immigrants from those countries would still harbor loyalties to their former nations instead of being loyal to their new homeland.
