What was an initial primary motivation for european exploration in the 1400s?

Much of what spurred European exploration in the 1400's was the prospect of economic growth. Many of the American lands that nations such as Spain and Portugal would end up settling, had large amounts of untapped natural resources. These natural resources were a sure way to secure a profit for the nations who funded many of the explorations throughout this century.
