According to Wikipedia an extinction event is a widespread and rapid decrease in the biodiversity on Earth. Therefore a mass extinction is this process on a massive scale

A mass extinction is when a certain group of animals or species suddenly die in large quantities with little to no hope of having a large birthrate to rebalance the losses.

This would have large effects on other parts of the food chain, and would lead to many species overpopulating and then drastically dying off

Hope this help
