Most African Americans tried breaking away from slavery, but it was no easy task. They knew the risks of getting caught, and that you could possibly be killed by your master, so most decided to stay and accept their fate. Some who did break out from slavery had a second task - escaping to the Union. Most of the slaves used the famous Underground Railroad, but some tried escaping on their own. Those who succeeded had to adjust to the harsh lifestyle that followed years after slavery.
