Education prospects were certainly available for former slaves, especially during the civil war. Many slaves who fled to the Union (or were freed by it during a battle) went to schools specifically designed for slaves. Often, many of them were sponsored by charity organizations. All of the ages were welcome to the school, whether you are six, or seventy-six didn't matter. Most common goal was to learn how to read, count, and master simple math. Some individuals continued their studies, and became well-known African American scientists and writers who still stand as a symbol of hope for all the races in the United States.
