An indentured servant worked only for a predetermined period of time in exchange for passage to the colonies. However, most servants were worked to death before their freedom was granted.

The daily life of an indentured servant and that of a slave was not very different, as they both worked extremely hard for no pay and very little comfort. However, the main difference between the two was the difference in their future prospects. An indentured servant had a contract, so he knew he was only working for a certain amount of time. On the other hand, a slave had no real hope of ever having a different life.
