Why were freedom of speech and freedom of the press important to the abolitionist movement

They were important due to the fact that if not for the two John Brown wouldn’t have spoke his thoughts, and he would have never taken the memory from when he was a child and saw the little slave girl hit by a shovel, he wouldn’t have gone public as his father did, it caused a movement that ended slavery, it was important for the United States moving forward to earning freedom.
