Azotobacter is a type of bacteria genus that lives in the soil. Among many other characteristics the bacteria utilize oxygen for cellular respiration, they also have the ability to convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia, importantly they have a thin peptidoglycan layer in their cell wall and they are rod shaped type of bacteria. These bacteria play an important role in the nitrogen fixation cycle since plants cant use free nitrogen in the atmosphere and therefore the bacteria converts it to ammonia which is in turn used by plants.
