The Ottoman Empire, during the early 19th century, was considered the ‘Sick Man of Europe.’ The Ottomans conquered several culturally distinct regions in the Middle East, Palestine, and the Balkans. During that time, democracy and nationalist sentiments were popular that directly challenged the rule of the Ottoman Sultan and their oppressive, genocidal tendencies. These peoples resented Ottoman rule that helped undermine the empire.
