Both the mitochondria and the chloroplast contain their own DNA and can synthesize their own proteins separate from the rest of the cells. They also replicate themselves very much similar to bacteria. This striking similarities leads us to believe that they were previously prokaryotes and therefore should be marked by Keiko.
