He accomplishes that by depicting a situation where God holds humans over a lake of fire and brimstone and he may choose to drop them whenever he pleases.
"Sinners in the hands of an angry God" is a sermon written by the American theologist Jonathan Edwards. He is using a lot of geographic metaphors in his work, in order to create a more powerful image and sensation.
