The central idea of Nadine Gordimer’s essay, “1959: What is Apartheid?”, is to persuade the National Party to end apartheid. Apartheid is a system enforced by the government that segregates and discriminate the black people. When this was published Apartheid is still prevalent, so the author just wants change.
