There was a mix of economic and political reasons for African Americans migrating to Newark. The South was still very much marked with violence and discrimination against African Americans, they moved North seeking peace and equality. Economical reasons were also important, Agricultural decline caused migration, African Americans wanted to seek better jobs in the North.

In Newark the Negro Welfare League of New Jersey was created, it aimed to help migrants to adjust to the new life.
