In The Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, the very first time Covey decided to beat Douglass it was because Douglass had let the oxen go free. Covey sent Douglass to get firewood but did not send him with oxen who were broken in to pull the cart. Douglass was doomed to fail and was later beat by Covey.
