Republicans were focused on trying to transform the social and economic institutions in the south; getting them back into the union and aiding the freedmen
freemen's ideas often clashed with the Republicans due to the fact that Republicans still wanted them to work in agriculture, but freedmen wanted their own land
ex-confederates were basically bitter all around because they didn't really want to join the union or let freedmen do anything so they worked against reconstruction
