Westinghouse payed attention to the problems of railroad signaling. By purchasing patents to combine with his own inventions, he was able to develop a complete electrical and compressed-air signal system. In 1883 he began to apply his special knowledge of air brakes to the problem of safely piping natural gas, and within two years he obtained 38 patents for piping equipment.
