The Black Codes were an extension of the Slave Codes. These codes were used to restrict the movement of fee African Americans. They set limits on movement, established curfews and largely curtailed the social, political and economic progress of African Americans. They were designed to limit interaction between free and enslaved. They were also used to prohibit speech and assembly and discourage slave rebellion.
