At the beginning of the story Phillip, and 11 year old, and his mother leave Curaçao fearing the dangers of the WWII.

The ship they are in is torpedoed and Phillip is stranded at the sea where he meets Timothy, they survive by feeding themselves wih fish and drinking rain water.

Timothy teaches Phillip survival skills.
