On the Gaspé Peninsula the French explorer Jacques Cartier on June 24 1534 took possession of the territory in the name of French King François I . It was Cartier who established the first French settlement on American soil, Charlesbourg Royal. The colonization was difficult and slow because they had to deal with harsh weather .
