What was the significance of the meeting of the estates general in 1789

It was the first time the estates generall had met in over 200 (think, fact check me) years. This was what louis had hopes would make the new taxes he hoped to impose tolerable. Essentailly, everything went south and the third estate ended up causing the french revolution.
