Napoleon's most serious defeat was probably in Russia, when he tried to invade Russia to defeat their army. However, after waiting for a peace offering, he began to retreat, where he was attacked by the Russian army. That, combined with lack of food, and terrible cold, seriously weakened Napoleon's army and his reputation.
