Mark Twain's point about imperialism in his title is don't act like a European empire when the American way of doing things is so much better. Although Twain's imagery was very disturbing and dark. He wrote "to the person sitting in darkness" as a satirical critique of imperialism. He was against the American involvement in the Philippines and China.
