The former Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, left Iran in January 1979. He was seeking medical treatment for his lymphoma in the United States. The Carter administration was hesitant because of possible consequences against the U.S. The Shah was finally admitted in October and on November 4th, the American Embassy was stormed by fundamentalists.
