Noah thinks the answers to these two questions will be the same. Do you agree with him? Explain your reasoning.

a. This year, a herd of bison had a 10% increase in population. If there were 550 bison in the herd last year, how many are in the heard this year?

b. This year , a herd of bison had a 10% decrease in population. If there were 550 bison in the herd last year, how many bison were there last year?

Answer:

No because in part a there would be 605 bison, then in part b there would only be 495 bison.

Answer:

Part a.

Last year, there were 550 bison in the herd.

This year, there were 10% more than last year, that means this year were 110%. So,

1.10(550)=605

So, this year were 605 bison in the herd.

Part b.

This year, there was a 10% decrease in population.

Last year, there were 550 bison in the hard. So, all this means that all 550 bison represents 90% of the last year. So,

0.90x=550\\x=(550)/(0.90) \\x \approx 611

As you can observe, part a and part b have different results, therefore, Noah is wrong.
