The United States Department of State is the branch of the executive that is in charge of leading and supervising the development of foreign relations. It states that its goal is to: "to build and sustain a more democratic, secure, and prosperous world for the benefit of the American People and the international community".

Regarding the legislative branch, the Committee of Foreign affairs debates matters regarding export controls, international commodity agreements, international education, and the protection of American citizens abroad and expatriation.
