Since stores will calculate the total price of your purchase for yo, why is it important to be able to calculate discounts yourself?

So you don't overspend.

Explanation:

Lets say you bring $10 and everything at the store is half off the price is half of its original (huge savings) and you buy a toy that was $12 and now its $6, if you calculate your own saving you know you have $4 left to spend.

It will confirm that the store is reliable enough and that the calculation they made was correct. Also, if we do the calculations mentally or on calculator, we can prepare the money to give at the counter.
