William Levitt, a Long Island building contractor, revolutionized the housing market by an extensive use of techniques of mass production in the construction of houses. These methods made the housing projects very affordable and soon many developments using these techniques arised, to the point that at the time they were called "Levittowns".

These Levittowns were revolutionary in the sense that they helped spark the growth of the suburbs within the US. William Levitt used his knowledge of building military style housing to apply to normal homes. He used mass production methods which brought the workers out to the site where they were making the homes and had all the materials necessary on site. In one day, Levitt's workers could frame out and build almost 30 homes.
