The horrors of World War I seeped into the collective imagination from writers like Erich Remarque (All Quiet on the Western Front) to films like the new documentary from Peter Jackson (They Shall Not Grow Old) to poetry from John McCrae and Wilfred Owen.

Each of these works looks to the concept of duty in light of impending death and the horrors of an entirely new style of warfare.
