How did women in the Civil War hospitals change the popular notions of American nursing and of American women themselves? In what way did nursing change those women who took up the challenge?

The nurses of the Civil War were an example of compassion and dedication to the cause of the ones in need. The American people have a sense of deep gratitude for the way they attended bodies and renewed the spirit of the soldiers during those difficult moments. With their dedication at work, they deserved the recognition of the medical community and nursing was recognized as a formal and true profession. Nurses like Clara Barton and Jane Woolsey were beyond the clinic camps and shared their experience in Civil War to educate future nurses.
