The answer is: Many independent states formed.

The dissolution of the USSR in 1991 culminated with the formation and acknowledgment of 15 independent republics which gained their sovereignty after being previously part of the Soviet Union. Some of the states that formed after the collapse include Ukraine, Armenia, Belarus, Lithuania, etc.
