During development, the circulatory system of the chick embryo translocates about 120 mg of calcium from the shell to the skeleton . When chick embryos are removed from their shells at day 3 and grown in shell-less cultures (in plastic wrap) for the duration of their development, much of the cartilaginous skeleton fails to mature into bony tissue
