Broadly speaking, urban sprawl is the expansion of urban areas without a strategic plan or control.
It occurs when there is a lack of adequate zoning to keep communities cohesive.
When that happens, buildings are allowed to be build wherever there is room with no thought given to an overall plan for the future.
