Federalism is one of the main ideas that make up the democratic government we know. This is because federalism is based on the existence of a diffuse central government that empowers all its members to achieve their goals embracing diversity.

The major importance of federalism to the US was the creation of a national government strong enough to exercise certain general powers, but not so powerful that it could threaten individual freedoms.
