The French Revolution which lasted from 1789 until 1799, unleashed a series of European wars. At first, the Americans felt enthusiastic about French democratic reforms which might transform France into a republican ally against the British monarchy. However, the Americans began to question the nature of the French Revolution and became frightened of the radical political-social change, since the revolution had started influencing U.S. politics as pro- and anti- revolutionary factions. Although many Americans sympathized with the revolution ideals, they were not in favour of the revolution’s most radical changes. As a result, the US adopted a policy of neutrality, so as not to interfere in the revolution.
