Popular sovereignty also called the sovereignty of the peoples' rule, is the principle that the authority of a state and its government are created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives. Hence popular sovereignty idea that all men are created equal, and that government is based on the consent of the governed, became the foundation for the US political ideal of popular sovereignty which influenced the creation of the declaration of independence.
