Answer: 9 squares

Each side is cut into 3 parts, so we have 3*3 = 9 smaller squares that result. Check out the image below.

The total area would be 81 sq ft for the larger square.

The total area would be 9 sq ft for the smaller squares.

81/9=9 smaller squares
