For the British, Boston was the epicenter of the rebellion. General Gage believed that by occupying Boston, he could quash the emerging rebellion. Eventually Gage would start sending his troops out into the great Boston countryside to search for storehouses of guns and gunpowder, sparking events like the skirmishes at Lexington and Concord.
