in the early history of the U.S. Warm weather and rich, flat farmlands made the South more suitable to plantation slavery and forced African settlement than either the North Central or New England areas.

in the the Northern States were forced by circumstances into a more mercantile traditions. such as fishing and other trades this was because their geography.
