A box contains 10 bells. There are 6 red bells and the rest are silver. What is the probability of picking two bells of the same color if the bell is replaced after each pick?

Probability is a ratio of the number of the relevant outcomes and the total number of possible outcomes.

Let us count:

Relevant outcomes:

First pick, followed by second pick:

6 choices of red bell, followed (after replacements) by 6 choices of red bell = 6*6=36 choices

4 choices of silver followed by another 4: 4*4 = 16 choices

so in total there are 36+16=52 relevant choices

Number of all possible choices:

10 possible picks, followed by 10 possible picks: 10*10=100

The probability:


P=(52)/(100)=0.52
