In 1516 Leonardo da Vinci was appointed as Premier/First Painter with another titles as Engineer and Architect to the King Francis I of France (positions he held until his death). The King of France invited him to live in his country as his honored guest. He also gave him living quarters in a castle not far from Paris and did not require much work of him. At that time Leonardo da Vinci was an old man. It is a fact that the King of France was fond of the great painter and paid him frequent visits (they talk to each other about many subjects).
