You are solving for b

-38 = b - 19

In order to solve b you need to get it by itself. To do this you must get rid of the -19 on the right side of the equation. You do this by adding 19.

-38 = b - 19 + 19

-38 = b (KEEP READING! DON'T STOP YET!)

HOWEVER, if you do something to one side of an equation, you must do the same thing to the other side. This means you must also add 19 to the left side of the equation to "balance" it.

-38 + 19 = b

19 = b

the equation is saying that -38 is the total after 19 is taken from B so B is -19, but then you take away an additional 19 from the negative to make it -38
