Celine has a bottle that contains 20% milk and the rest water. The bottle has 1 liter of water. Part A: Write an equation using one variable that can be used to find the total number of liters of milk and water in the bottle. Define the variable used in the equation and solve the equation. Hint: 0.2x represents the number of liters of milk in the bottle. (5 points) Part B: How many liters of milk are present in the bottle? Show your work.

Part A:

x - total number of liters ( milk + water )

0.2 x + 1 = x

Part B :

0.2 x + 1 = x

0.8 x = 1

x = 1 : 0.8 = 1.25 lit.

Milk:

1.25 x 0.2 = 0.25 lit.

Answer:

Celine has a bottle that contains 20% milk and the rest water. The bottle has 1 liter of water.

Let there be x liters of mixture in bottle.

And 0.2x is milk and 1 liter is water.

So, total mixture can be represented as :
0.2x+1=x

Now to know the liters of milk in mixture, we will solve for x

0.2x+1=x

0.8x=1

x = 1.25

And we know that milk is 20% of 1.25

This becomes:
0.2*1.25=0.25 liters
