Western technology was an important factor for the Europeans' conquest of Africa and parts on Asia. The technological superiority allowed European to take advantage of military meanwhile the Africans and Asians only had outdated weapons.
The steam engine allowed Europeans the means of transportation on rivers. They could transport weapons, ammunition, food and all the supplies needed for long periods.
