5x - 3y = 7 ... (i)

-2x + 7y = 3 ... (ii)

Solving the simultaneous equations by elimination; we multiply (i) by 2 and (ii) by 5 to get:

10x - 6y = 14 ... (i)

-10x + 35y = 15 ... (ii)

Adding (i) and (ii) gives;

29y = 29

y = 29/29 = 1

Substituting y = 1 in equation (i) gives;

5x - 3(1) = 7

5x = 7 + 3

5x = 10 , x = 2

So the solution (x,y) is (2,1).
