All the chemical reactions in the cell comes under metabolism. Metabolism is divided into two pathways that are anabolic pathway and catabolic pathway.

In anabolism, simpler and smaller compounds are converted into larger and complex compounds in a chemical reaction like in the case of photosynthesis where CO₂ and H₂O gives rise to larger molecule called glucose.

In catabolic pathways, these complex and larger molecules are again broken down(decompose) into smaller and simpler molecule in a chemical reaction.

The breakdown of these molecule release energy in the environment so it is an exergonic process like respiration. Therefore synthesis and decomposition processes are involved in metabolism.
