Like his older contemporary Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer had a curious intellect and scientific mind in addition to being an artist. Also like Leonardo, Dürer's surpassing skill and inspiration made him a leading artist of the Renaissance. His prints inspired Italian artists for generations. His manual "Of Human Proportion," written in German and translated into Latin and Italian, became a perennial mainstay of Italian art education. (He was working on a sequel, "On Horses," when he died in 1528.)
